Misadventures in the Cage (Misadventures) by Sarah Robinson

Sarah Robinson is a true favorite of mine. Every time I start one of her works, I feel as if I have come home. It feels natural and true. In Misadventures in the Cage, that feeling was there from the start.

We are given a woman whose career has been coopted by the focus of her family's needs. Josie wanted to pursue a career as a chef.
She went to the best culinary school in her area to learn her trade the right way. She studied hard and became accomplished, ready to start at the bottom in a kitchen and work her way up. Yet, no matter where she sends her resume and recommendation letters, every restaurant in Las Vegas has either sent a polite letter saying nothing at this time or no response at all.

So here she sits at a dive bar away from her home's glamourous strip nursing her wounds on another polite rejection. She knows she is playing hooky from all of her responsibilities as her brother's assistant and glorified babysitter. Making sure her brother behaves 24/7 is a full-time job when he is the champ MMA and is the star of his reality show. Josie knows it is the show and the family motto of Everything for the Family is how she is able to live the life she has...but when is enough enough.

Callan has been watching this beautiful woman at the bar for a while now. Her curly locks and smooth chocolate skin has made him want to get up close and personal but he has held himself back. He has been debating if he should approach her because she didn't look like she wanted any company. As he is making the move to see what was up, Josie is halfway out of the bar. Callan also sees a man moving quickly to go after her and that concerns him.

It was a good thing due to a number of circumstances and this is how Callan and Josie meet.

Timing in life is everything. Josie annoyed with everything that has been happening in her life is wanting to just have a moment for herself...no 24/7 tv crew following her. The fact that Callan is handsome, smart, built like crazy and doesn't seem to know who she is....is Perfection.

Callan is a man who has his own following...and he is thrilled he doesn't have to deal with the questions of why the woman is with him rings so strong...he is all in.

When Josie suggests she go to his place, Callan checks to make sure Josie is not making drunk decisions. After proving she is clearheaded and not impaired, it is all systems go. Rules of this meeting are set as this is only going to be one night.

These two make a connection on a level very unusual for either of them. Callan has been focused on his career and breaking through to the next level. Josie has been tied to this family's Reality show and has had no time for any personal life. When they come together, fireworks go off and all they want is more.

Life being what it is...you know there has to be a hiccup and boy, oh boy, there is a big one...Josie's brother is the MMA Champ and Callan is his challenger!

I was all in from the very first page and it was a strong read all the way through. It looked hard at this Reality TV life and how it can suck the soul of someone and make them go along to get along. It also spotlighted the question of how much does a family member owe another...When is enough payback enough for what they may have done for them...

Both of these characters had strong personalities and their need to make a way in this world on their own. To be their own person. Callan was more sure of himself and was able to realize his feeling for Josie early on. Josie had other obstacles which complicated everything and needed to work through everything to get where she could live in her moment.

There were a couple of situations that made me a tiny bit annoyed but overall this was a true Sarah Robinson Winner for me.
