Black Matter - J. C. Hamilton

****4 Messed Up Stars****

Book provided by author in exchange for an honest review.

Please note that this is not my usual genre to be reading or reviewing - so please bear with me.  Jo contacted me yesterday and asked me to read her book and in chatting with her, we discovered that we both work with autistic children and children who are put in the "system".

So, you guessed it - this book deals with a worker and the terror of children who pass through the doors of "Children Youth Services".

All in all the book held my attention but there were parts which confused me.  There were times a story was being told from a boys POV and I couldn't understand where he came into play, but then about 1/2 way through the book - it was uncovered that these were flashbacks of the psycho's childhood.

This book takes a reader through a very dark journey of snuff films, child abuse, sexual abuse without going into the gory details.  This is left up to the reader's imagination and thank goodness for that because I don't know if the normal person could stomach the innuendos of the horror which was portrayed.

This is a story about Anna - Anna is a social worker and is working on a case which she has to take the child from the mother.  In the process, Anna finds out that a well known pedophile from the area is in the family's lives.  It is uncovered that the child has suffered from sexual abuse and Anna is determined to find out what happened and tie David "the pedophile" to this vicious act.

Through diligent case work, Anna realizes that this may not be the only case of sexual abuse.  She must fight with her own demons throughout the book and go against "work" standards to bring this psycho down.

Note that there is also a bit of romance going on too!
